Planetary Scale (10¹⁶ W)Continuous historical tracking of world energy consumption and Kardashev rating.
In 1964, astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev proposed three integer civilizational tiers based on power consumption: Type I (10¹⁶ W), Type II (10²⁶ W), and Type III (10³⁶ W). In 1973, Carl Sagan introduced a continuous logarithmic scale to interpolate values between whole integers.
Breakdown of primary energy use, continuous power consumption, and respective national Sagan indices.

Power: < 10¹⁶ W (< 10,000 TW)
Civilization extracts power from organic, chemical, and basic nuclear fuels. Humanity currently operates at ~19 TW (K ≈ 0.73).Power: 10¹⁶ W (10,000 TW = 10 PW)
Capable of harnessing all energy delivered to Earth from our star (~1.74×10¹⁷ W) or deploying widespread fusion and planetary-scale storage.Power: 10²⁶ W (100,000,000 PW)
Capable of capturing the total radiant energy output of its home star using megastructures such as a Dyson swarm or sphere.Power: 10³⁶ W
Controls and channels energy across the scale of an entire galaxy spanning hundreds of billions of stars.energy.energy_mix_data
